EU restrictions for heat pumps? This could change everything!

English: The European Union is planning to tighten regulations on gases used in heat pumps, among other things. As a result, some devices may disappear from the market in just a few years.

However, the industry warns that it is too early to find an alternative, which may be a problem for some producers. The pursuit of climate neutrality and reducing dependence on Russian fossil fuels makes heat pumps an important part of the EU's energy strategy. As part of the REPowerEU plan, it is assumed that 10 million heat pumps will be installed in EU countries by 2026 and 30 million by 2031. However, the European Parliament has recently adopted a position on the ban on the use and sale of fluorinated gases (f-gases), which are commonly used in many heat pumps.

The industry expresses concern that heat pump manufacturers will not be able to adapt to the new regulations in time, as developing alternative solutions, certifying and implementing new technologies takes about five years. In the case of some technologies, such as the use of propane, the process may take even longer due to safety issues. MEPs also noted the problem and in amendments drew attention to the need for strict monitoring of the market situation and ensuring that changes to f-gas regulations do not disrupt the EU heat pump market.

Polish and European heat pump manufacturers express a joint objection to the drastic restrictions on the use of f-gases, calling for the ban on putting devices with f-gases into circulation to be postponed to later dates. This would allow companies to develop alternative solutions and invest in new technologies, while also supporting employment and economic growth. The European Parliament has so far only adopted a position on reducing emissions of fluorinated gases. Negotiations with member states and the European Commission will soon begin, during which the final shape of the regulations will be developed. The version passed by the European Parliament may still change.
